EVENING · DAY FOUR

A house of peace at nightfall

A short evening devotional for the household. King James Bible.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

Reflection

There is a moment, just before the last light is put out, when the household falls quiet. If the day has been hard, the quiet is loud. If the day has been full of joy, the quiet is warm. Either way, the household is under Christ's watch. The child who fell asleep on the sofa is under His eye. The brother a thousand miles away is under His eye. The sister whose diagnosis came back frightening this afternoon is under His eye. We do not keep our own house through the night — He does. And so we lie down, not because the day was fully solved, but because the Lord is fully present.

Prayer line

Lord, tonight I lay down in peace. Keep every soul under this roof, and every soul I love who sleeps elsewhere. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
