EVENING · DAY ONE

The quiet end of the day

A short evening devotional for the household. King James Bible.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14 (KJV)

Reflection

The evening is the hour when the day quietly asks to be told the truth about itself. Not the polished version, not the version that would be posted online — the truth. There were things said today that should not have been said. There were kindnesses received today that were not thanked for. There was a moment, perhaps around three o'clock, when a brother was near and we were far. And there was mercy, more than we noticed. The Psalmist prays that the words of the mouth and the meditation of the heart would both be acceptable to the Lord. The evening is where we let Him examine both. And where He, having examined, is willing to forgive.

Prayer line

Lord, examine the words of this day and the meditation of my heart. Cleanse me. I sleep in your mercy. Amen.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
