FAMILY REGISTER · ENTRY TWO

The open door

A Family Register entry — a short scripture-anchored reflection written in the household voice. King James Bible.

“Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” Romans 12:13 (KJV)

Reflection

A Christian household is measured, in part, by who feels free to knock on its door. Paul does not tell the household in Rome to build a large hall. He tells them to be given to hospitality — to be the sort of household that already leans in that direction when the doorbell rings at the wrong hour. Brother, sister, dear one: the open door does not mean the perfect house. It does not mean the kitchen is clean or the child is quiet or the day has gone well. It means the household has already decided, before the knock, that a saint at the door is not an interruption but a small visitation. Set out one more cup than you think you will need. That cup is a confession of the family into which we have been adopted.

Prayer line

Lord, give our door the habit of opening. Send us the ones we would not have thought to invite. Amen.

May the Lord bless you, dear one of this household, and keep you.
